Seller: gabrielli-art (4.289) 100%, Location: Youngsville, New York, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 283322231252 A very handsome and venerable figure of a young Lord Buddha, seated upon a complex lotus petal throne. He is 9.5 inches tall, modeled in the style of the Ming dynasty and dates from the 1800s. He could very easily be earlier, but I like to be a little conservative in dating. It looks as though the entire figure was originally gilded, but with the passage of time & many hands, naturally, most of the gold has worn away creating a very interesting patina with the rich chocolate brown of the rest of the figure. He is rather heavily cast as are many of these earlier figures. What I love most about this Buddha is his exquisite young face with his open eyes and gentle smile which seem to invite easy communion with him. He is 9 1/2 inches tall, made in the style of the Ming dynasty and dates from the 1800s. He could very easily be earlier, but I like to be a little conservative in dating. It looks as though the entire figure was originally gilded, but with the passage of time and many hands, naturally, most of the gold has worn away creating a very interesting and attractive patina with the rich dark chocolate brown of the rest of the figure. He is rather heavily cast as are many of these earlier figures. The bottom of the figure is open, but I believe it was once closed and was probably forced open to take whatever items had been sealed within at the consecration of the image. Our Buddha is seated in Padmasana, the full lotus or adamantine position, which is usually reserved for images of the Buddha after his enlightenment. He holds his hands in Dhyanamudra, the mudra or gesture of meditation. His two hands are placed in his lap, palms facing upward, index fingers and thumbs forming a triangle, symbolic of the spiritual fire or the Triratna, the three jewels. He sits serenely dressed in a simple monk's robe open across the chest and falling in exquisitely modeled folds. On his forehead, he has an urna, a circular auspicious mark which symbolizes a kind of a third eye with which he is able to see past this world of suffering, samsara, into the world of enlightenment. He has the three rings at his neck which mark him as a Mahapursa, or individual of deep spiritual wisdom. There is an inscription on his back which is probably an invocation. And in the middle of his coiffure is a round shape which symbolizes the spiritual light which emanates from him and from his teachings. What I love most about this Buddha is his exquisite young face with his open eyes and gentle smile which seem to invite easy communion with him. This is a very happy and cheerful Buddha. He is also very beautifully made. The photos give a very good idea of this extraordinary example of Sacred Tibetan Art. If you should have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. And thanks for looking. Due to the limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures may be slightly different on your monitor from the Buddha himself, but I did my best to capture him as he is. And at least on my monitor, the color is a very good match. A MESSAGE TO MY CLIENTS: I have recently become disabled with lymphoma in my spinal column, a neurological condition similar to multiple sclerosis and my right hand/arm paralyzed, of which some time ago I fell and broke both bones. The cast is off now, but 2 months in a cast have left the arm and hand much for the worse. This is slowing me down a bit, especially the packing up, as I am completely alone. But I am trying to do my best. I do manage to get most items off in the four day handling time that I specify I should also apologize for not being able to make the elegant packages I used to make. My hand just won't obey. I am trying, but I am alone, which adds to the difficulty. When I get one-handed packing down perfectly, I shall add it to my resume.
